2018 YoungArts & Scholastic Honorees

The Pius XI Art Galleries are featuring work from 2018 graduates Ariana Padovano, Xavier Lightfoot and Clara Schoenbeck. This sampling of work represents portfolios that were awarded national distinction from YoungArts and Scholastic. These competitions are the most competitive in our nation and are closely watched by higher educational institutions both domestically and abroad. These students have been afforded extraordinary opportunities for their participation.

Through YoungArts, Xavier was elected as a finalist and from there was selected as a 2018 Presidential Scholar, one of three in visual arts nationally. He was invited to The White House and his work was shown at the Kennedy Center.  He is currently attending MICA on a full merit scholarship.

Ariana was selected as a YoungArts Merit winner and is attending Rhode Island School of Design on scholarship.

Clara was selected for 2 years in a row as both a YoungArts merit and honorable mention winner. She is currently attending UC San Diego.

Clara, Ari and Xavier were all attended YoungArts Week, a fully funded week-long experience working with professional artists in LA, New York and Miami respectively. All had professional exhibitions in these major cities, Clara and Xavier have had additional exhibitions in Miami. Pius XI students are entering the academic and professional world with great distinction, advantaged by the education and opportunities afforded though the Visual Arts Program at Pius XI.

The sampling of work in the Carron Family Gallery represents student portfolios and individual works that have been awarded distinction on a national level. AP students create a portfolio senior year, that synthesizes both technical and conceptual skills driven by what they have to say. We drive our students to ask hard questions, to pay attention to how they pay attention. We teach them how to match their materials and processes to their ideas. The individual student and their voice are at the center of our process. The result is student artwork that is as potent as it is diverse as the students themselves.
