Global Youth Leadership Institute partnered with the Nicholas Sparks foundation to gather high school students in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area of different cultural backgrounds for a day of cultural exploration and storytelling. The day was filmed and will be made into a documentary highlighting ways youth are preserving their cultures within small U.S. cities. The intention is use this film in classrooms throughout the U.S. – helping students to gain an understanding of someone else’s cultural story upbringing in the U.S. that is different than their own.
Participants and Locations:
- Filmmaker: Ian–12th Grade at Pius XI Catholic High School
- Hindu Temple of Milwaukee: Asnhul–10th Grade at Brookfield East High School
- Milwaukee Asian(Hmong) Market: Aaron–9th Grade at Hmong Peace Academy
- Glencastle Irish Dance Studio: Meghan–12th Grade at Brookfield East High School
- Islamic Society of Milwaukee: Leila–12th Grade at Salam School
- Mexican Street Festival: Marychel–Freshman at Marquette University
The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the students.
